Juan E. Milanés, Esq.
Mr. Milanes is the Immediate-Past President of the Hispanic Bar Association of the Commonwealth of Virginia (an HNBA Affilliate).
Mr. Milanés has built a solid reputation for outstanding legal work and inspirational management and mediation skills.
Before embarking upon his distinguished career as a Trial Attorney and Federal Prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Mr. Milanés attained invaluable trial and litigation experience during the several years he worked at a major Washington, D.C. law firm and at the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs. Mr. Milanés has experience in the areas of federal civil and commercial litigation, civil rights litigation, bankruptcy, admiralty, insurance coverage and premises liability. Throughout his twelve year career with the federal government, Mr. Milanés held several positions of significant responsibility, ranging from Trial Attorney with the Aviation and Admiralty Office, to Attorney-Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), to trainer for the Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training Office. During his time at DOJ, Mr. Milanés appeared as lead counsel in over 500 cases, successfully trying several. Mr. Milanés has carried over his experiences and successes as a public servant into the private sector, wherein he has applied his considerable problem solving, litigation and courtroom experience to the benefit of commercial and individual clients.
In 1988, Mr. Milanés obtained his Bachelor's in International Studies from the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Houston, Texas. In 1991, he graduated from the Washington College of Law at The American University, Washington, DC.
Mr. Milanés is licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the District of Columbia. He is also licensed to practice in the U.S. Court of Claims and U.S. District and U.S. Bankruptcy Courts for the District of Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, Eastern District of Virginia and Southern District of Texas. In addition, he is admitted to the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Federal, First and Fourth Circuits.
